Photographing the exquisite experience of childbirth for the first time thirty years ago, I longed for everyone to see what I was witnessing... courage, strength, love, and the grace of woman giving birth, babe being born. The profound emotional, bodily, social and spiritual realms came into utterly clear focus.
I have followed that longing to make visible this elemental reality of birth that we all share. Along the way I became a midwife. Midwifing is another privileged lens into the wisdom and nature of birth.
My three sons and former husband encouraged me with their abiding belief in the value of what I was doing. I appreciate their trust and understanding deep in my heart and beyond words.
Birth is such a metaphor for the whole of life. I explore this belief as I continue to photograph experiences of living after we have been brought to this earth by birth. I am guided by the mystery and awe one feels in the presence of the sacred.
